The second Qalima meeting happened in September. Based on peer nomination, Jendela Ide Foundation in Bandung was asked to lead. They invited a fantastic line-up of speakers: Djaelani (Director of Jendela Ide, musicologist, curator, composer, and educator), Bintang Manira Manik (world music artist), Iman “Kimung” Rahman Anggawiria Kusumah (writer, musician, researcher, and cultural activist), and Lintang Pramudia Swara (writer and cellist). Each shared their experiences teaching, learning, platforming, researching, playing, and practicing traditional music and instruments.
As host, I took a fairly hands-off approach, with Jendela Ide taking charge of the who, the format, and the expectations. In our discussions, I suggested refinements and drew out expectations, working in the background to secure support or engagement from other confirmed participants. Special thanks to Grace Kuo, Daniel Filex James and Marla Anonuevo for their sustained questioning. This was not a meeting limited to the time spent online.
