I received an email from Joella Kiu (Curator, Singapore Art Museum) last year inviting me to write an essay for the museum’s website. I was glad to accept, and to revisit a practice I did not manage to spend enough time on before.
As I sat in the Marricksville cafe across from Simryn discussing this writing, I was struck by how much the discipline assume (obviously it is my opinion and not the artist’s!) in comparison to the lay reader (well, I guess I do not exactly say “I think that..” at every turn…). I thank the artist who has, once again, reminded me of how small-minded I can be.
