The University of Melbourne Art History department has invited Cheo Chai-Hiang to deliver a seminar to us about his artistic and teaching practice.
Cheo Chai-Hiang (Jiang CaiXiong 蒋才雄) will give an illustrated talk sharing his journey as a student, teacher and practising artist who has lived and worked in many places over the years including in Singapore, London and Sydney. Chai’s work negotiates thought trajectories related to identity, culture and place. His practice spans a wide range of disciplines including painting, printmaking, sculpture, installation, time-based and site-specific-work, and writing.
Using images of his work as a lead-in to discussion with seminar participants, Chai’s talk will refer to the following topics:
- making do
- imperfection
- translation
- rejection
- teaching and learning as an art practice.
- heritage and memory
